What is Zovirax?

Zovirax is an antiviral medication that is prescribed to treat the herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection found in people who have genital herpes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as ‘viruses of HSV’ or ‘herpes.’ The term ‘ herpes’ may refer to no less than six months old sexual age, and may also include any time between the times they first have symptoms like pain, redness, swelling or a burning sensation in the genital area.

This medication is most effective when started at the first symptoms of genital herpes, and continues to work for six months after symptoms have lifted. It is also highly effective against the cold sores (herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2 that cause genital herpes) that develop within the cold sore population. This medication is now also used off-label for the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia, a type of nerve-sparing nerve disease.

Cold sores can last for months or years, and are found only in the first five to seven days of symptoms, although they can also occur within the first five days of life, at any age. Cold sores are highly contagious and are passed from person to person, and from mother to child. Cold sores are very contagious and are very easy to detect if the skin is cold.

Zovirax works by interfering with the herpes simplex virus's ability to reproduce and replicate, which in turn prevents the virus from multiplying and spreading to other people. This makes it highly effective in treating cold sores and can even prevent them from spreading to others, particularly those who have cold sores that are painful or tender.

The active ingredient in Zovirax is acyclovir, a type of antiviral that stops the herpes simplex virus from multiplying. Acyclovir is highly effective against HSV and helps reduce the pain, redness and discomfort that accompany cold sores. Zovirax is an antiviral medication that is effective against cold sores, and can even treat the symptoms of the nerve-sparing nerve disease. Zovirax is also an antiviral treatment that can be used to prevent shingles (herpes zoster) in people who are at risk of developing shingles due to the herpes virus.

Zovirax is most effective when started at the first symptoms of cold sores, and continues to work for six months after symptoms have lifted. It is also an effective treatment for post-herpetic neuralgia, a painful nerve-related disorder in which the nerve-sparing nerve disease causes nerve pain and burning.

Cold sores can be hard to detect, and are generally caused by the virus. Zovirax can also partially prevent the growth of the virus, so it is important to finish the full course of the medication as prescribed. However, cold sores can also spread quickly and can be very contagious, so it is very important to avoid kissing your child while using Zovirax as it may spread to them. How does Zovirax work?Zovirax stops the herpes simplex virus from multiplying, so preventing the virus from spreading can help speed up the healing of the cold sore.

Zovirax Cold Sore Cream. Works at tingle & blister. Clinically proven to improve healing and treat the virus.

Zovirax Cold Sore Cream is indicated in adults and children for the treatment of a cold sore which is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus

Stages of the virus

After the itchy, tingly stage, the site of the cold sore gradually develops into a blister or a small group of blisters, surrounded by red and swollen skin.

After a day or so these burst to produce the typical open sore.

Like a sore anywhere on your body, these sores gradually dry up and form a crusty scab, which is usually a yellow-brown colour.

The sore gradually heals.

The scab falls off over a few days and should completely disappear after around 10 days, or faster with the use of Zovirax Cold Sore Cream.

The area may be a bit swollen for few days.
