Acyclovir cream is to be used at the beginning of treatment at the first sign of symptoms, at the first sign of the tingling sensation associated with an outbreak of fever, and at the first sign of the blisters that surround the painful and prolonged sore, which may be painful and difficult to treat. Acyclovir cream should not be used by people under 12 years of age unless the doctor has told the person to do so. In children under 12 years old, it is recommended to use Acyclovir cream only on sores that are painful or that are caused by the virus, such as on the face, which can be painful. Stages of the virus
After the itchy, tingly stage, the site of the cold sore gradually develops into a blister or a small group of blisters, surrounded by red and swollen skin.
After a day or so these burst to produce the typical open sore.
Like a sore anywhere on your body, these sores gradually dry up and form a crusty scab, which is usually a yellow-brown colour.
The sore gradually heals.
